Christmas Island

Well Chopperdoc returned from his mission armed with the duty free, including a litre bottle of Bombay Sapphire for roughly £10, though if you think that's cheap you should go to Christmas Island because on Christmas Island it's £7.50 (in the supermarket).

He also came armed with a boarding pass for the 05.25 Qantas flight from Perth to Sydney; the chopperdoc plane's been leaking transmission fluid, the pilots are still stranded in WA. Good job I found out after he got back, I wouldn't have liked to have known in advance.

Ironically, Christmas Island gets deserted at Christmas because it's population comprises 60% Chinese, 20% Malay and 20% Australians plus others. Most of the people who live here work in the phosphate mines and they all go home for the holiday season.

The total population is 1200 people and the hospital has only eight beds. It's most famous for the big red migrating crabs, the sort David Attenborough made a film about for the Planet Earth series, though from now on, whenever I hear Christmas Island, I'll think Bombay Sapphire.

I thought I'd heard of it on Attenborough. Like the price of the saphire though. I may have to pop there next time I'm over that way.
