Labour Day Bank Holiday

Spent most of the day on the beach at Clovelly today, the bank holiday looking exactly as a bank holiday should and never does. And right on cue, the first bushfires have started in one of the national parks north of the city.

At the weekend, the premier of New South Wales lost a bet with the premier of Victoria. As settlement, he's agreed to remove the NSW flag from the top of the harbour bridge and replace it with the Victorian one, which is a bit like the board of directors at Liverpool FC agreeing to fly the Manchester United flag over Anfield. I don't know how long it'll be there but I wonder whether the sydneysiders will even notice; they're all so busy barbequeing.

As it's the beginning of the season, the surf lifesavers were busy wheeling the boat down to the water's edge in their red and yellow outfits this morning, which made me realise that was the missing piece in the jigsaw these last few months - it just doesn't look like an aussie beach without the lifesavers.

They start the lifesaving thing early here - each club seems to have a junior version taking kids from roughly five years of age and training them up on the water. Like our lifeboats, they don't get any financial backing from the government, so they rely on fundraising instead.

Anyway, we've had a lovely day, though we realise we need a bit more kit before we can claim to be the all-aussie family; a sun tent for a start (20 of them lined up on little Clovelly beach at high tide today), and a suntan, though we're working on that. My toe-nails are now paler than my feet - a starter for ten.
